Amex F29 chargeback (card not present): what evidence wins
By Zevron · 2 min read · Updated
What an F29 dispute claims
F29 is American Express’s card-not-present fraud dispute. The cardholder tells Amex they didn’t make or authorize an online order. Amex volume is smaller than Visa or Mastercard for most stores, so a single F29 can be a larger share of your disputes than you’d expect.
As with other fraud codes, the question is whether this order looks like the customer’s or like a stranger’s. The records that answer it are the same on every network.
You get one submission on Shopify Payments and Stripe. Gather everything first and submit before the due date shown in the dispute.
The evidence that wins
| Evidence | Why it matters | Required |
|---|---|---|
| Order record | The disputed charge and the details the bank can check. | Yes |
| Customer history | Earlier undisputed orders from the same customer. | Yes |
| Device, IP or address match | Ties the disputed order to those earlier ones. | No, decisive when present |
| Carrier tracking | Delivery to a verified address. | No, strongly helps |
| Subscription record and usage | An active account the cardholder used. | No, helps |
The order to argue it in
- Address and CVV checks passed at authorization.
- The cardholder has a history of undisputed orders with the same device, IP, or address (Visa CE 3.0 when it qualifies).
- The goods were delivered to the cardholder's verified address.
A response template
The order [order #], [amount], was placed on [date] from IP [address] on device [id] and passed address and security-code checks at authorization (Exhibit A).
The cardholder has [n] earlier orders with us, none disputed, placed from the same [device / IP / shipping address] (Exhibit B).
The goods were delivered on [date] to [address], the address on the order (Exhibit C) [or: the account was used on [dates] (Exhibit C)].
The order was placed by the cardholder or with their authority. We ask that the dispute be resolved in the merchant’s favor.Mistakes that lose winnable F29 cases
- Sending the delivery record without the address it was delivered to. The bank checks it against the order.
- No device or IP data. Capture it at every purchase and every renewal.
- Treating Amex like a different problem. The evidence is the same; only the code changes.
- Contesting a first-time order from a mismatched address. Accept it and improve screening.
