Usage evidence for digital subscriptions: logins, devices and the proof banks accept

Why usage is the strongest proof you have
With digital goods there’s no delivery scan. The question the bank asks, for Mastercard 4841, Visa 13.2 and 4855 alike, is whether the customer got and used what they paid for. A record of use after the renewal answers it in a way the cardholder can’t easily dispute.
What to capture
| Data | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Login timestamps | Shows the account was used, and when, relative to the charge. |
| IP address | Ties usage to the cardholder, and matches earlier payments. |
| Device ID or fingerprint | Ties the usage to the same device as earlier payments. |
| Actions: sessions, downloads, content accessed | Shows meaningful use, not just a login. |
| Account details | Email and name matching the cardholder. |
The argument
- The cardholder agreed to recurring terms at signup (terms version, timestamp, checkbox).
- A renewal reminder was sent before the disputed charge, with a link to manage or cancel.
- No cancellation request was received before the renewal date.
- The cardholder logged in and used the product after the renewal (access log with dates, IPs and devices).
- Earlier payments from the same customer, device or IP were never disputed.
Usage also answers fraud claims
When a customer says they didn’t make the purchase, the same device and IP records tie the account to earlier undisputed payments. That’s the basis for Visa Compelling Evidence 3.0. Capture IP and device at signup and at each renewal.
Keep to what you need
Log the data you need to run the service and defend payments, tell customers in your privacy policy, and set a retention period. Evidence you can’t legally or sensibly keep isn’t evidence.
Questions
What usage evidence wins a digital subscription chargeback?
Login records with timestamps, IP addresses and devices, and actions such as sessions or downloads, showing the cardholder used the product after the charge.
Can I get logs after the dispute starts?
Only if you were already capturing them. Capture the data in advance.
Does usage help with fraud claims?
Yes. Matching device and IP records tie the account to earlier undisputed payments.
