Mastercard 4853 chargeback (cardholder dispute): what evidence wins
By Zevron · 2 min read · Updated
What a 4853 dispute claims
4853 is Mastercard’s catch-all for a cardholder’s dispute with the merchant: what arrived didn’t match what was sold, it was defective, or the service wasn’t as promised. It’s the Mastercard counterpart to Visa 13.3.
Banks look for whether the customer tried to resolve it with you first. A customer who went straight to the bank without a return request is the case you can win.
You get one submission on Shopify Payments and Stripe. Gather everything first and submit before the due date shown in the dispute.
The evidence that wins
| Evidence | Why it matters | Required |
|---|---|---|
| Listing as it read on the order date | Proves the product was described accurately at the time of sale. | Yes |
| Published refund and return policy | Proves the customer knew how to return or get a refund. | Yes |
| Support conversation | Shows no return or refund was requested, or that you offered one. | No, strongly helps |
| Carrier tracking | Shows the product was delivered intact. | No, helps |
The order to argue it in
- The product delivered matches the listing as it read on the order date.
- The refund and return policy was disclosed at checkout.
- The cardholder did not request a return or refund under that policy.
Mistakes that lose winnable 4853 cases
- No dated snapshot of the listing. A page edited since the order proves nothing.
- A policy that exists on your site but wasn’t shown at checkout.
- A support request you didn’t answer. The bank can see it.
- Contesting a genuinely defective product. A refund costs less than a lost dispute.
