Visa 12.6 chargeback (duplicate processing): what evidence wins
By Zevron · 2 min read · Updated
What a 12.6 dispute claims
Reason code 12.6 is Visa’s duplicate-processing dispute: the same transaction was charged more than once. In subscription businesses it is easy to trigger by accident, because a customer who sees two similar charges on one statement assumes one is a mistake.
The usual innocent causes are two renewals in one statement (a monthly plan and an add-on), an order placed twice on purpose, or a retry after a failed charge that both went through.
You get one submission on Shopify Payments and Stripe. Gather everything first and submit before the due date shown in the dispute.
Check whether it really was a duplicate
- Compare the two charges: amount, timestamp, order number and the product on each.
- Look for a retry. A failed payment retried and then also manually paid can charge twice.
- If the two charges are the same order, refund one now. It’s a loss either way, and refunding before the bank decides spares you the argument.
The evidence that wins
| Evidence | Why it matters | Required |
|---|---|---|
| Order record for each charge | Shows each charge is a separate order or billing period. | Yes |
| Customer history | Shows the customer’s ordering pattern, such as a recurring plan plus add-ons. | No, strongly helps |
| Delivery or usage for each | Shows the customer received or used what each charge paid for. | No, strongly helps |
| Policy | Shows the billing schedule was disclosed. | No, helps |
The order to argue it in
- Each charge corresponds to a distinct order the cardholder placed.

- Make each charge self-explanatory on the receipt and the statement descriptor.
- Send an order confirmation for every charge, so a customer can match two charges to two orders.
- Guard against double-charging on payment retries.
