Zevron vs Shopify’s built-in chargeback response

Side by side

Statements about Shopify’s built-in response are from Shopify’s own public pages, listed under Sources. Where we didn’t find something, we say so rather than say it isn’t offered.

ZevronShopify’s built-in response
Who writes the responseOur evidence engine drafts it; a separate checker blocks any claim without a source record; a person reviews anything unusual.“a defense of your case is written for you by Shopify using AI”. “The defense is added to your response by default.” source 2
Evidence added for youReads the plan from Shopify selling plans, then adds cancellation logs, cancel-flow sessions and renewal reminders from connected tools, and records checkout consent through an events API. Support threads, delivery scans and logins come from the tools you connect.“The evidence that’s included automatically comes only from your Shopify admin”: refund records, customer order history, shipping tracking, previous disputes, and your subscription policy for subscription-cancelled disputes. source 2
Evidence left to youOnly what no connected tool holds. We ask for it in one line on the case, and say which deadline it’s for.For subscriptions, the “Subscription agreement”, “Cancelation records” and “Billing notifications: Renewal reminders or payment receipts sent before the charge”, plus emails and chat logs, and usage logs for digital products. source 2
PriceYour first 10 disputes are free. After that we charge 15% of what we recover, and nothing when we lose. No monthly fee, no setup fee, no contract. We didn’t find a separate charge for the built-in response on the pages we reviewed. The US chargeback fee is $15, and “If you win the chargeback, then the fee is returned to you.” source 2
DeadlineFiled before the deadline. If we miss one we received with two days or more to go, the disputed amount (up to $500) goes on your credit balance.“Your response is submitted to the credit card company on the due date, even if you don’t add any evidence yourself.” The due date “varies from 7 to 21 days after the chargeback or inquiry is filed.” source 2, source 3
PreventionA monthly report on what’s causing your disputes, with a fix for each cause, and your dispute ratio against Visa’s line. Its page says a won dispute still counts on your chargeback rate. We didn’t find a prevention report on the pages we reviewed. source 2
Shopify ProtectDisputes on orders Shopify Protect covers are left to Shopify. We don’t file them or charge for them.Free on eligible Shop Pay orders, for fraudulent and unrecognized chargebacks: “The disputed amount and the chargeback fee are immediately reimbursed to you as a credit.” Its page names not-received, defective and not-as-described chargebacks as outside its protection. source 4, source 5

Who each is for

Consider Shopify’s built-in response if

Stores whose disputes are mostly delivery or fraud claims that Shopify’s order and tracking data already answers, or that Shopify Protect covers, and who have the time to add evidence themselves before each due date.

Consider Zevron if

Subscription brands losing “I forgot I subscribed” and “cancelled subscription” disputes, where the evidence that wins them (cancellation logs, renewal reminders, support threads, logins) lives in tools Shopify doesn’t read.

Where Zevron is behind

  • Shopify’s built-in response is already in your admin, and we didn’t find a charge for it. Zevron charges a share of what it wins.
  • Filing through Zevron needs Shopify’s dispute-evidence permission, which Shopify grants app by app. Until we have it, we prepare the response and it is filed by hand.
  • Zevron is newer, and doesn’t yet have a public track record. We’ll publish results by dispute reason once we have enough decided cases.
  • Zevron lists fewer integrations. Other processors work by forwarded email or CSV, which is more manual.
  • Zevron doesn’t score orders for fraud before they ship. It works on disputes and prevention reporting.
  • Zevron doesn’t yet hold a SOC 2 report. See the trust page for what we do today.

Questions

Doesn’t Shopify already answer chargebacks for free?

Yes, with what’s in your Shopify admin: orders, refunds, tracking, earlier disputes and your subscription policy. Shopify’s own help pages list the subscription agreement, cancellation records and renewal reminders as evidence for you to add. Those are what win a subscription dispute, and they’re what Zevron brings.

What about Shopify Protect?

Shopify reimburses fraudulent and unrecognized chargebacks on eligible Shop Pay orders. Zevron marks those disputes as covered and doesn’t file or charge for them.

Do I have to stop using Shopify’s response?

No setting to change. Zevron files through Shopify’s own dispute API, so the response still reaches the bank through Shopify Payments, before the due date.
