Finding the reason code on your dispute

Your processor’s dispute page shows a reason, such as “subscription cancelled” or “fraudulent”. The card network’s own code, like Visa 13.2, is usually in the dispute details or the bank’s notice. Both point to the same playbook, so search either.

For how Shopify’s reasons map to network codes, see Shopify chargeback reasons explained.

What to do with a code

Open the guide for the code. Each one lists the evidence that wins, the order to argue it in and a response template. Then use the evidence checklist to gather the records before the due date.

Questions

What is a chargeback reason code?

A code the card network assigns to what the cardholder claims, such as cancelled recurring or not received. It determines what evidence the bank expects.

Are Visa, Mastercard and Amex codes the same?

No, but equivalent claims exist on each. Visa 13.2, Mastercard 4841 and Amex C28 are all cancelled-recurring disputes and are answered with the same evidence.

Where do I find the code on a Shopify dispute?

Shopify shows a plain reason on the dispute. The network code is in the dispute details or the bank’s notice. Search by the Shopify reason if you don’t have the code.
